Chapter Fourteen

Much to Fenn’s relief, before Jazz could insist on Fenn telling her fantasies, they were at the senior community where Fenn’s friends lived. After taking the bags from the back of the car, and with Bailey staying close to Fenn, they climbed the steps to the front door.

“Why isn’t this door handicapped accessible?”

“There’s a door around back near the parking lot that is at ground level.”

“I’m sure this door is required to be accessible to all.”

“Maybe it’s on the owners’ list of things to do when they renovate the entire building.”

Fenn attached a short lead to Bailey’s collar. When they entered the lobby of the building, Fenn saw her friends immediately. She led Jazz and Bailey to them.

“We thought you forgot about us,” Gloria said as she approached Fenn. Gloria, who preferred wearing sweatpants, wore a nice pair of navy-blue slacks, a red button-down shirt, and sandals. Her gray hair was getting longer every time Fenn saw her. If she were to hazard a guess, she’d bet Gloria didn’t have the money for a haircut.

“Never, Gloria,” Fenn said. “First, you remember Bailey.”

After they had oohed and aahed over Bailey, Fenn said, “Glo, this is my...” Fenn was stuck. She didn’t know what to call Jazz.

“Hi, Gloria. I’m Fenn’s girlfriend. My name is Jazz.”

“I can see why,” Gloria said, smiling at Jazz. “My name is Gloria for the record, but my friends call me Glo.”

“Hi, Jazz. My name’s Maureen,” she said smiling brightly. Maureen was dressed up, too. She wore a pair of navy slacks and a white shirt. Fenn noticed the cuffs of the shirt were frayed, and the sandals Maureen was wearing were missing a strap on the left shoe.

Dahlia approached Jazz. “My name is Dahlia, and I’m the youngest of this motley crew,” she said with a smile that could light up a room. Her southern roots were on full display, and her accent was even more southern, if that was possible. She had on a summery dress that flared at the hips and fell just below her knees, and the straps on her sandals were silver lamé. Fenn had never seen any of her friends so dressed up and put together before.

“What’s the occasion? Have you three been out dancing again?” Fenn asked with a smile. The previous year, the three women had gone to a dance being held in a nearby senior community, much higher scale than their own. They had told Fenn their goal was for one of them to snag a rich husband. Alas, Gloria had informed her, the rich men were on to them and the hundred other women at the dance, and they had stayed away. Gloria, Maureen, and Dahlia had watched all the women dancing with one another for ten minutes and returned home, husbandless and still poor.

“Nah. We learned our lesson from our first excursion into promiscuity,” Gloria said with a laugh.

“We brought you dinner. I suggest you take this up to your rooms, so you won’t get mobbed when you open the bag.
